THE THIRD
TEMPTATION
Luke 4:5-8; Matthew 4:8-12
The devil has taken Christ to a high mountain to show him all the kingdoms
of the world and material wealth. The devil points to the pile of treasure
and Christ refutes him. The painted treasure comprises a gold crown, bowl
and ring. That is rather a small pile for this scene, and much more treasure
was originally intended. Sketched beneath the paint are a scattering of
jewels, another ring and a smart gem-studded circular brooch.
A pile of very distinctive treasure is shown between Christ and the devil
in the Anglo-Saxon manuscript, London, British Library, MS Cotton Tiberius
