CHRIST DISAPPEARING AT THE SUPPER AT EMMAUS, DISCOURSE ON THE SPIRITUAL BATTLE, PSYCHOMACHIA

Christ rises from the table and disappears through the roof of the house. The disciples’ gestures show their astonishment. ‘And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight’ (Luke 24:31).

Christ vanishing in this way at the supper is an innovation of the St Albans Psalter. The vanishing feet have a long pedigree in Anglo-Saxon Ascension scenes (Schapiro, 1943). By coincidence, a close successor to it is the late 12th-century enamel plaque at St Godehard’s church Hildesheim (Brandt, 1998, 98-101)

This page has been planned for a smaller illustration than on pp69 and 70, so that the discourse can be fitted to the side and below. The right edge of the page has been trimmed excessively, so that some word endings are lost. Every third line is written in red. The blue and green lines alternate in such a way that two adjacent lines are never the same colour. The sequence is GreenBlueRed x4 + BGRx4 + GBRx4 + (BGR/GBR)x3 + B. The capitals also alternate so they are never the same colour as the rest of the word.
