Historical Relevance: Lord before you is all my desire: and my groaning is not hidden from you. When Christina stayed the night at Shillington, just after making her secret vow at St Albans, she began her private dedication to God with these words. (Talbot, 1998, 40-41). She used the words of this psalm again when she reached Flamstead and began her confinement as an anchoress and refugee, casting off her fine silk dress for a rough garment. She lamented her own weakness and the violence and guile of her parents and friends.(Talbot, 1998, 93) My heart is thrown into confusion my strength has left me: and the light of my eyes itself is not with me. My friends and my neighbours: against me have approached and stood. And they who were near me stood far off: and they did violence who sought for my soul. And they who sought evils to me spoke falsehoods: and studied deceits all day long. But I as one deaf did not hear: and as one dumb not opening his mouth. And I did as a man not hearing: and not having rebukes in his mouth.
