Psalm: 99
Iconography: The head of God looks out at Moses who carries the tablets of the law (AP, 241). Beside him stands Aaron, identified by his flowering rod, priest's tonsure and vestments. Six Israelites stand behind them. The psalm is one of universal praise, Rejoice in god, but the illustration takes on the aspect of confession.Moses confesses the sins of the children of Israel who, with Aaron's support, had made a golden calf to worship (Exodus 32). Aaron's flowering rod was a reminder of the rebellious children of Israel (Numbers 17:2-10).Only God's face appears because, in blessing Moses, he said 'My face shall go before thee' (Exodus 33: 14)
